I Remember Dave Meeks

I remember the year Dave Meeks died, and how he had taught me how to be a Young Life leader through his cancer.  In his early thirties, Dave was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.   I remember him painting life colours to the words, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

I remember him teaching me the basics of how to lead a Bible study, and how much he loved those old songs from the 1982 worship books.  I remember eating cheese steaks at team meetings and praying for each other.  I remember how he always let his dear three-year old daughter interrupt our bible studies, and how his welcoming love often said just as much as our study did.

I remember how vividly he and Tracey taught me how to “live in what is true of today.”

I remember him giving club talks in the Wilson’s living room, hardly able to read John 1 anymore, because the brain tumor was stealing his sight.  And he told a room full of high school kids who loved him that Jesus is alive, and he read from an old J.B. Phillips New Testament.  And they listened.
